The Tigresses’ Bold Ambition: Bangladesh Ready to Shock Three-Time Asian Champions DPR Korea in Historic Debut Clash

In a moment that captures the spirit of underdog defiance and rapid growth in Bangladeshi women’s football, the Tigresses are gearing up for what could be one of the most memorable upsets in recent continental history. Debutants at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026, Bangladesh face three-time winners **DPR Korea** (North Korea) today at Western Sydney Stadium in Sydney. Fresh off a valiant 2-0 loss to defending champions China PR—where they showcased resilience against a side ranked nearly 100 places above them in FIFA standings—the team is hungry to deliver another fearless performance and perhaps spring the surprise of the tournament.

Head coach **Peter Butler** has instilled a mindset of authenticity and self-belief in his young squad. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Butler acknowledged the steep challenge: “We’re going to face a very strong team. You look at where they are in terms of their FIFA rankings; they are probably one of the favourites for the tournament. We’ve got to be on top of our game, but we are under no illusion that it’s a tall order to win this game. It’s about being the best version of ourselves. If we do that, we can win a few hearts and minds from the stands.”

Butler emphasized playing without fear and staying true to their identity as an emerging force. “All I want is for us to come here and be true to ourselves. We are an emerging team and we are in a situation where we are up against three good teams. We are where we are and we have to accept the way things roll.” This pragmatic yet optimistic approach stems from a deliberate squad strategy: roughly half the players are eligible for the upcoming AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup in Thailand later this year. Butler views the Asian Cup as invaluable preparation, noting the superior training facilities, pitch quality, and opponent strength compared to regional SAFF competitions, where Bangladesh has dominated as back-to-back champions.

The Tigresses’ historic debut against China was a testament to their progress. Despite trailing 2-0 at halftime after late first-half concessions, they displayed disciplined defending, quick transitions, and attacking intent that surprised many observers. Players like Ritu Porna Chakma led the charge, embodying the team’s blend of youth, speed, and determination. That battling spirit earned praise even from opponents—DPR Korea head coach **Ri Song Ho** admitted after reviewing the match that Bangladesh were “better and stronger than I expected,” highlighting their fast attacking line and quick counter-attacks.

Ri, however, is taking no chances. DPR Korea, sitting atop Group B after a convincing 3-0 win over Uzbekistan, are focused on securing their path to the knockout stages. “We won the first match, but the remaining matches are equally important for us,” Ri said. “It is a chance for us to keep improving ourselves and we are focused on our training in order to achieve the best possible result.” He stressed full concentration, refusing to rely on goal difference scenarios in what could be a tight group. “I understand how the group situation could unfold, where a draw in the third match might see the group decided on goal difference. But this is not our preferred strategy because we want to win every game.”

This matchup pits raw potential against proven pedigree. DPR Korea, with three Asian Cup titles to their name, boast a rich history of dominance in women’s football on the continent. Yet Bangladesh arrive as SAFF powerhouses, unbeaten in recent regional campaigns and qualifiers that secured their Asian Cup ticket in Myanmar last year. The Tigresses’ journey here represents a quantum leap—after decades of building, this is their first taste of elite continental competition.

For Bangladesh, success isn’t solely measured in points. Every tackle, every forward surge, and every moment of composure against superior opposition builds experience for the future. The squad’s youth infusion ensures long-term benefits, bridging the gap between regional success and global relevance. Butler’s vision is clear: use these high-stakes games to accelerate development ahead of the U-20 Asian Cup.

As the Tigresses step onto the pitch today, the narrative is one of courage over caution. Can Bangladesh defy the odds, frustrate DPR Korea’s rhythm, and perhaps steal a result that echoes across Asia? The football world watches as an underdog story unfolds—one where heart, preparation, and fearless play could turn “tall order” into triumph.

Bangladesh’s campaign is more than matches; it’s a declaration of arrival. Win, lose, or draw, the Tigresses are already winning hearts by daring to dream big on the grandest stage. Today, against three-time champions, they aim to do more than compete—they aim to surprise.
